Lost in Redondo - April 1999
1921 Arts & Crafts House Demolished

On April 1st 1999 the Redondo Beach Unified School District demolished the "Little House" at 112 El Redondo, sending the message that parking is more important than history.

Unfortunately, this was not an April Fools day joke - although the timing of the destruction was a complete surprise to the neighboring residents, the Society and some City Council members.

The School District donated the house to the Society last spring, provided that the Society would move the house to Heritage Court. Once moved and restored, the City would have taken ownership of the house.112_elparlorbuiltin.jpg (6121 bytes)

Unfortunately, the City and the Society were unable to negotiate a contract that was agreeable to both parties.

Neighboring residents and Society members addressed the City Council and School District officials in early March, requesting that the School District consider alternative uses for the building (such as an alumni office, associated student body office, etc.). Society members also suggested that the School District complete a proper environmental review for the new project (demolition vs. relocation).

A City Council sub-committee met with School District officials on Monday, March 29th to discuss the School District’s plans for the property. The end result of this meeting was the demolition on April 1st.

The house contained original built-in cabinets, a floral wool carpet, window seats, crystal doorknobs and wavy glass nine panel windows.
